The great thing about the student loan is that everyone is entitled to 75% of the maximum loan no matter what your parents' financial circumstances are. If your parents' income is less than the set threshold then you will be paid the extra 25% as well.
This is means-tested by your LEA, who pays your loan in three termly instalments. In 2003/4, the maximum amount of loan available was £4000. Unfortunately it isn't "free money" because you will have to pay it back! However, repayments don't start until after you graduate and earn over about £10,000 a year.
If you get into serious financial difficulty then Hardship Loans up to £500 are available, as are extra loans for disabled students.
