What is Pandemic Flu?
Þ A global epidemic of a new strain of flu
Þ Few people, if any have any immunity to it so it can spread more rapidly than ordinary seasonal flu and cause more severe symptoms
Þ Up to 50% of the population may catch pandemic flu
Þ It usually in two or three ‘waves’, several weeks apart, with each wave lasting up to 15 weeks
How is flu spread?
Þ Person to person, through coughs or sneezes
Þ Touching hard surfaces - where the virus can remain active for up to 24 hours – then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands
Þ Contaminated soft surfaces, e.g. bedclothes, where the virus can live for up to two hours
Þ People are most infectious when they first develop symptoms and for up to 5 days thereafter (7 days in children)
What are the symptoms?
Þ Sudden onset of fever or raised temperature
Þ Cough
Þ Headache
Þ Sore throat
Þ Sneezes and runny nose
Þ Weakness or tiredness
Þ Aching muscles
Þ Loss of appetite
Þ Stomach ache
Þ Diarrhoea
Þ Vomiting may occur, particularly in children

Þ If you do not have access to the internet, call the swine flu information line 0800 1 513 513 or,
Þ Telephone your GP
Þ Do not visit your GP’s surgery yourself if you have flu symptoms
Þ If you have a higher risk of complications from flu, start taking your antiviral medication straight away
How to prevent spread
Þ Always carry tissues
Þ Use clean tissues to cover your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze
Þ Bin the tissues after one use
Þ Wash your hands with soap and water often
Þ Encourage these good respiratory and hand hygiene practices in others
